Kids Stand Up for Kids

What can you do for a child who’s being abused?

And how can you help all the kids who’ve been abused?

Kids and teens have more power than they think…and you can put it to good use helping your friends—and all of the kids who are abused.

Are you worried that your friend is being abused?

Sometimes it’s hard for kids to go to an adult and tell about abuse, because they’re worried it’s their fault. It’s never the kid’s fault. If you’re a friend of yours is being hurt, you can step in to help. Do this:

  1. Tell someone. Tell a trusted adult or friend. Don’t keep it a secret. Remember, it’s not your friend’s fault, and she has a right to be safe.
  2. If the person you tell doesn’t believe you, keep telling people until someone does.
  3. You can also call one of the Child Abuse Hotlines and tell them what’s happening to your friend:

You can also tell your friend about Bivona Child Advocacy Center. Show him our web site. Reassure him that he’s not the only child who’s been abused, and that help is available. Tell him…”It’s not your fault. And you have the right to make it stop.”

Help spread the word about Bivona—and child abuse

People don’t like to talk about child abuse. But keeping it secret is one of the ways that abusers can continue to hurt kids. So it’s important that kids learn about physical and sexual child abuse, and know when something is not right and what they can do to protect themselves.

On our For Children page, we explain how to know if you’re being abused, and ways to protect yourself in the real world and online. Check it out, and send your friends there, too.

Would your school or team or Scout troop or other group like a presentation about child abuse?

We’re happy to come to your class or group and explain child abuse and how Bivona helps kids who’ve been abused. We can also talk to your school about child abuse education that can be included in your regular class work. Contact us, and we’ll see what we can do together.

Throw a Bivona Birthday Party

This is an idea that came from two girls in Fairport, who invited their friends to a joint birthday party, and asked their guests to bring donations for Bivona instead of gifts for the girls. They raised…$600!…for Bivona kids. We use the money to provide protection, treatment and counseling to kids who’ve been abused.

“I was really happy we raised so much money for a cause that supports abused kids. But I didn’t know that much about Bivona until after we made our donation. When I saw the Bivona video and learned how many kids are being abused I thought ‘whoah, some of my friends have had this happen.’ It really made it important for me to help.”

—Abby Kochan

“After our party we visited the center to make our donation and have a tour. There were families and kids there. That was when I realized, this is real, it’s happening all over…I really don’t have words to describe it, it just felt so nice to be able to help. Our donation became so much more.”

—Mo McJury
